Vernonia Businesses
Out for a Sunday drive? Come to Vernonia and beyond. Here are some things to see and do when you visit the Vernonia area.
From Portland, head west on Hwy 26 to just beyond Manning. As you turn north on Hwy 47 to Vernonia, the small community of Buxton is just off the highway to your right, on Pihl Road. Here you will find access to the Banks-Vernonia Linear Trail. The trail is for hiking, biking and horseback riding. Come on up to Vernonia via the trail.
As you head north on Hwy 47 to Vernonia, you will see a new state park being built. Originally created as Hares Canyon State Park, it has been renamed L.L. "Stub" Stewart State Park.
From Vernonia, continue north on Hwy 47 toward Jewell and stop in at the Blue House Mediterranian Cafe and Espresso Bar. Call 503-429-4350. 10 am to 8 pm. Closed Mondays.
Next you come upon Big Eddy County Park.
Next is the Peterson Museum. Call 503-429-7791 for hours.
Drive by the Natal Grange and school, a well-preserved building and host to the Hood-to-Coast runners every year.
Head to Jewell and stop in at The Birkenfeld Store. This is a beautiful, historic building. They serve sandwiches and snacks and more. Call 503-755-2722 for hours.
Right across the street from the store is Ernie's Filling Station Restaurant. Call for info and hours 503-755-0910.
Now you are on to the Elk Refuge.
Don't forget to stop at Fishhawk Falls just past the refuge. This is a day use park with a lovely waterfall. Great place to stretch those legs. Now on to Astoria. See Fort Clatsop and learn some Lewis and Clark history. Visit their website.
Alternate trip/route:
Just past the Spar Tree Restaurant you could take a right and head to St. Helen's or Scappoose for a day of shopping and recreation. In the near future an extension to the Linear Park Trail will connect Scappoose with Vernonia. On your way to Scappoose, you will pass Scaponia County Park. Once in St. Helen's/Scappoose there are many things to do. You can also visit Rainier and Clatskanie, as well as Longview, WA. The old saying is that All Roads Lead to Vernonia. We hope you enjoy your visit to Vernonia and its surrounding area.
